Summer season is the period of everything light and short in the closet. And although the jeans and pants are still relevant, on the hottest days they are unconditionally superseded by shorts. And there are a lot of options for their performance – from ultra-short models in a sporty style to elegant, with medium length trousers. Today’s article focuses on bermuda shorts. The interesting name refers to thoughts of exotic vacations. But is there a real connection between this piece of closet and the resort islands? Let’s find out and share with you!

Any bermuda is, first of all, the models with medium length trousers. In other words, they should be above the knee, but still cover the hips. As for the silhouette, there are no specific rules. As a rule, designers produce models of free cut – simply because it is more comfortable. However, and tight-fitting design, by and large, is not prohibited.

If we talk about fabrics and materials, we can again note the model diversity. Depending on the chosen style, and chooses the material. For example, for everyday models, knitwear is the most preferred. And for “winter” options it is even possible to use wool. In addition, fashionable brands produce denim shorts in this silhouette – it is better to choose them in a non-standard blue color.

Like many closet items, bermuda shorts came to us from the army outfit. And if we talk specifically about the heroes of our today’s article – from the British army outfit. And yes, their name, indeed, is related to Bermuda. After all, this is the location where the British military was based during World War I.

It is interesting that the British in general are very conservative, and especially when it comes to army uniforms. However, the hot climate of Bermuda still forced the military to reconsider their views on the traditional outfit. At first, only a few officers were willing to do that – they just showed up to the formation wearing cropped pants. Later the military leadership also noted the economic benefits of the new uniform – the shorts used less fabric, which allowed to save money.

Bermuda shorts received civilian circulation thanks to the head of the Bank of Bermuda. The enterprising Jack Lightbourne spotted the British novelty and bought several pairs from the army’s top brass. He did not put them on sale immediately, however, but gave them to his employees, who were able to maintain the elegance of their uniform, but became more comfortable. After some time Lightbourne also organized private production, which, in fact, began the ascent of the stylish novelty.

Bermuda shorts also played a big role in the issue of gender equality. As you know, about 70 years ago, women were forced to wear mostly skirts and dresses.

Today such shorts are very relevant – especially in a knitted version. They are, without a doubt, among the top most popular models. And the design varies from strict classics to sporty minimalism. That, in turn, allows you to experiment with images, without losing comfort!
